CORNERSBURG, Ohio (WYTV) – This week’s Hometown Hero survived breast cancer 20 years ago and is now using that experience to help others.

You can follow “Yellow Brick Road” to Yellow Brick Place on Youngstown-Canfield Road in Cornersburg.

This is where you meet our hometown hero, Carol Apinis. She and several others founded this cancer wellness center six years ago.

“In our region we have so much medical support, wonderful medical support, but cancer affects every aspect of your life. So we are there for the other aspects of your life, ”said Apinis.

The Yellow Brick Place takes care of a woman’s needs: skin care, makeup, even wigs.

Apinis says she let women come in, try on a wig and burst into tears – they have their lives back.

“My problems are nothing compared to what they are going through and being there to help them on their journey, that is our mission here,” said Beth Keating, volunteer.

Volunteer Steve Burbrink is a prostate cancer survivor who is taking his group to Yellow Brick Place.

“I tell them that they have to be positive, this is number one when you are going through these treatments. Be positive, have a sense of humor, you have to laugh a little and have a little confidence,” said Burbrink.

A fundraising campaign is currently taking place in Yellow Brick Place. Call 234-228-9550 to purchase Tax Day Raffle tickets, which will be drawn on Thursday April 15th, the original tax day.
